ABSTRACT

Parent participation in early childhood care and education (ECCE) is crucial for children’s growth and development. It is more important within the context of mobile ECCE services because it targets a population of children living in remote or underprivileged communities. Research shows that parent participation positively impacts children’s learning outcomes. However, engaging parents actively in their children’s education can be challenging for mobile ECCE practitioners. This study aimed to investigate the strategies utilised by practitioners to enhance parents' active participation in mobile ECCE services. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was supported by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory to inform the study, capturing the experiences and perspectives of 20 selected ECCE practitioners from two mobile ECCE facilities. Data analysis was facilitated by using ATLAS.ti software, which led to the emergence of seven themes. The findings shed light on the array of strategies practitioners employ to enhance parent participation in mobile ECCE services. Despite the challenges, practitioners demonstrated resourcefulness and creativity in promoting meaningful partnerships with parents. Several recommendations emanating from the findings were suggested. The study’s contribution to knowledge is grounded in promoting collaborative relationships between ECCE practitioners and parents to optimise children’s learning and development outcomes.
